Renewed Dialogue Between US and China: American Delegation Visits Shanghai and Hopes for Productive Discussions

The world’s two leading economies, which oppose each other on a number of issues, have renewed dialogue in recent months with a succession of visits by senior American officials to China, while a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his counterpart Joe Biden cannot be excluded.

The delegation’s plane landed early in the afternoon in Shanghai, the economic capital of China. Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer was greeted upon his arrival by US Ambassador Nicholas Burns. The delegation included his Republican colleague Mike Crapo, who represents the state of Idaho, where the American semiconductor giant Micron is located.

In May, US senators including Chuck Schumer announced a plan to combat China’s growing influence in the world. The initiative plans to limit the flow of investments and advanced technologies to the Asian giant and to deter Beijing from any aggression against Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.

Asked about his expectations in China, Chuck Schumer said he hoped for “very productive discussions”.

“Objectively”

“We hope that this visit will allow the American Congress to objectively understand China,” the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated on Wednesday, while “welcoming” such a trip. According to the Bloomberg agency, the American delegation hopes to meet in the coming days in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

This trip to China comes at a time when a meeting with his American counterpart is planned. Joe Biden mentioned on Friday as “a possibility” this meeting with Xi Jinping during the Apec (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) summit scheduled for mid-November in San Francisco. “Such a meeting has not been organized, but it is a possibility,” he told the press when asked about this possibility.

In recent months, Beijing and Washington have renewed dialogue with a succession of visits by senior American officials to Beijing, including the head of diplomacy Antony Blinken in June.
