Tripoli, North Lebanon, October 6, 2023 (Xinhua) Today (Friday), the Lebanese Army Navy rescued 134 illegal immigrants who were on board a boat that broke down off the coast of Tripoli, the largest city in northern Lebanon, according to a security source.
The source told Xinhua News Agency that the Lebanese army received a distress call from the boat, so its navy headed to the place, where it worked to rescue the passengers, including 131 Syrians, two Palestinians, and a Lebanese.
The source added that the passengers included children and women, all of whom were in good health, and they were transported to the port of Tripoli.
The boat set off at dawn today from the coast of Akkar in northern Lebanon and broke down off Tripoli and was on its way to Cyprus, according to the source.
Meanwhile, the official Lebanese National News Agency reported that the Lebanese Navy was able to rescue 125 illegal immigrants.
The Lebanese security forces are intensifying their efforts to combat the phenomenon of illegal people smuggling and to limit illegal immigration trips by sea through a set of administrative, judicial and security measures.
