Boyko Borisov: The Phenomenon of Bulgarian Politics

FACTS posts opinions with a wide range of viewpoints to encourage constructive debate.

Commentary by journalist Elena KODINOVA

Before anything happens in Bulgarian politics and we start to resemble some normal European country, we must admit one thing – Boyko Borisov is the greatest politician of our entire transition.

I say this with the bitterness of a man who has torn many shoes to protest against him. And who is aware of all the obscurity of his rule both in Sofia and in the country.

Boyko Borisov was the first politician who discovered the formula for successful management in Bulgaria – to be OK with the “bosses”. Ivan Kostov, before him, thought of the same thing after seeing (and participating in) the color revolution against Zhan Widenov, who had decided to make Bulgaria a sovereign and independent state. There was no way the “bosses” were going to allow that. Kostov took advantage of the reaction of the “bosses”, helped them, they allowed him to steal for 4 years. But he did not understand what Boyko understood – you must continue the service even when you fall from power. Kostov had imagined that this was a one-time tax. Me, it’s for life. That’s what Boyko knows and that’s why it’s so durable. Buzzwords, memes, protests, denunciations, investigations – nothing pushes him. Teflon!

Boyko Borisov also masters a skill that I have been trying to master for a long time – to present yourself as simpler than you really are. Then your enemies dull their attention and then you can do whatever you want with them. This is what he is doing now with PPDB. They are sure that he is dumb and they are smart as hell, but he turns them on a spit and beats them like a machete at a piper.

Boyko is a political animal. A phenomenon. Part psychopath, part banker, part sweet talker, part guy who knows how to work with people and has no qualms about trashing them if they get in his way. I’ve been following politics for over thirty years, I’ve never seen anything like it. I can’t bring myself to spit on him and at the same time wonder how he can be defeated. So far, I don’t see any political force that can stand up to him.

The political force that will make Bulgaria a normal country is the one that will be able to outwit Boyko – but not take his place (as both PP and DB are trying to do, who get an erection when they think about how they would steal the place of Boyko and that’s what they strive for) And to change the game, but that’s why balls are required. He seems invincible so far. More invincible than Dogan. I say this with hellish sorrow and bitterness.
