Pieter Omtzigt is in no hurry with his decision about his possible ambition to become Prime Minister of the Netherlands. The Member of Parliament and leader of the New Social Contract (NSC) has said for a while that he has no interest in becoming prime minister if his recently founded party becomes the largest in the House of Representatives elections in November.

Recently he has started to think differently about it. In television program Op1 Omtzigt said that he is still thinking about it with his candidate MPs. “But we’re not going to rush.”

Omtzigt was present at the talk show with about twenty members of the NSC list. No one raised their hands when asked whether their party leader should also become prime minister. “We do things one by one,” Omtzigt said. We are now waiting for the election manifesto. Almost all parties have already presented them. Omtzigt expects to be able to present his party’s program within two to three weeks.

A number of themes of the election manifesto are already known; If it is up to Omtzigt, there must be better government and a new electoral system. More must also be done to improve social security and food poverty among a large group of Dutch people.

Distribution centers

He also wants to limit migration, he explained Op1, up to a maximum influx of 50,000 newcomers per year. This not only concerns asylum seekers, but also foreign students and labor migrants. To reduce the latter group, there should be no more large distribution centers, Omtzigt said, where they are often put to work for a low wage.

The expat scheme must also disappear. This is a scheme whereby knowledge migrants are exempted from paying taxes by 30 percent. To keep out foreign students, Dutch must become the language of instruction at universities and colleges. And family reunification can also be limited, Omtzigt believes.

Boos

Omtzigt was at home for about sixteen weeks in 2021 with a burnout and his return was difficult for him at the time, he said. At the time, he was bombarded with questions about his political future and he mainly wanted to continue with his work as a one-man faction. At that time he was also sometimes angry and lashed out at employees, he admitted Op1. “I’m not proud of that.”

He is doing better now. Omtzigt: “I feel much better about myself. I feel a lot better.”
