IonQ Announces Rack-Mountable Quantum Computers for Enterprise and Government Data Centers

IonQ, a leading quantum computing startup, has announced the development of two rack-mountable quantum computers for on-premises deployment in enterprise and government data centers. The #AQ35 IonQ Forte Enterprise and #AQ64 IonQ Tempo models represent the fourth and fifth generations of IonQ quantum computers, respectively. The company has also revealed its plans to deploy two quantum computers in the US Air Force.

Jungsang Kim, co-founder and CTO of IonQ, announced that companies are already using quantum computers for machine learning workloads, indicating that the widespread adoption of quantum computing is on the way. Kim believes that within the next few years, quantum computers powerful enough to handle the tasks that classical computers face will be built, making quantum computing valuable to businesses.

Although some scientists predict that the mass adoption of accessible and affordable quantum computers is still several years away, there are signs that the systems may be deployed sooner. IonQ originally introduced its Forte quantum computer in 2022 and made it available in the cloud this year. The local version will be available in 2024 and offers a 40% smaller size compared to its predecessor, as well as 64 times more processing power.

The IonQ Tempo model, which is expected to be released in 2025, surpasses the computing capabilities of classic PCs and GPUs. Its computing space is 536 million times larger than the Forte model. However, IonQ CEO Peter Chapman acknowledges the need to reduce the cost of quantum computers, although no pricing information for the new models has been released.

As the field of quantum computing continues to evolve, IonQ’s breakthrough in local quantum computers brings us closer to the era of enterprise-grade quantum computing. (Source: Fierce Electronics, ITPro)
