NEW YORK – A New York appeals court ruled Friday to block a judge’s ruling revoking Donald Trump’s business licenses and leaving his companies in the hands of a court-appointed receiver.
In turn, the appeals court determined that it will not suspend the civil fraud trial in Manhattan.
The former president’s lawyers had asked the state intermediate appeals court to suspend the lawsuit by New York Attorney General Letitia James and prevent Judge Arthur Engoron’s ruling from being applied.
Engoron “evidently does not understand the magnitude of the chaos caused by (his) decision,” attorneys Clifford Robert, Michael Farina and Michael Madaio wrote in a 41-page appeal brief as they began the fifth day of testimony in the bench trial.
The decision “will undoubtedly cause serious and irreparable harm” not only to Trump and other defendants, but to employees and others “whose livelihoods depend on the affected entities,” the lawyers argued.
Companies are “suspended in uncertainty and ostensibly no longer able to pay their employees,” and the status of any New York bank accounts or properties they maintain is unclear, they added.
Last week, the appeals court rejected a last-minute attempt to postpone the trial days before it was to begin. On Thursday, Trump’s lawyers withdrew a lawsuit they had filed against Engoron as part of that appeal.
