Dubai, 6 October / WAM / In the presence of Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, CEO of the UAE Independent Accelerators Authority for Climate Change (virtually), the Emirates Circular Economy Council today reviewed the UAE Circular Economic Landscape Report for the year 2023, and reviewed Private sector experiences in this field.
This came during the third meeting of the Council, which was chaired by Her Excellency Maryam bint Mohammed Al Muhairi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, today and hosted by the Majid Al Futtaim Group in Dubai, where the achievements and developments of work related to the implementation of the circular economy agenda in the relevant sectors were reviewed, and the best plans, experiences and practices of the sector were reviewed. Specializing in this important and vital field, in addition to discussing a number of topics that focus on accelerating the implementation of the circular economy policy in the country in four main sectors: manufacturing, food, infrastructure, and transportation.
The meeting, which is held on a quarterly basis, was attended by His Excellency Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, and members of the Council.
In her speech during the meeting, Her Excellency Maryam Al Muhairi said: “The UAE is working to promote the circular economy and find solutions to increase the contribution of sustainable economic practices in supporting this trend through cooperation between various stakeholders and strategic partners from the private sector. This council represents an embodiment of participatory work in order to consolidate The circular economy and increasing its contribution to the country’s journey towards sustainable economic development, as well as achieving climate neutrality by 2050.”
Her Excellency added: “We are happy today to review the report on the circular economic landscape of the UAE and the achievements and efforts contained therein that we can build on and multiply through serious and continuous cooperation between us. The report also embodies our keenness to provide pioneering experiences and expertise in this field. We look forward to these merchants participating in the pioneering work and others.” During the COP28 Conference of the Parties, which begins in Dubai next November.
Her Excellency concluded: “The circular economy represents a major pillar for building a sustainable future, by preserving natural resources from waste, reducing environmental pollution, and making tangible contributions to maintaining unprecedented growth rates, in addition to enhancing economic competitiveness now and in the future. I call on all members of the Council to Continuing work and increasing the involvement of the private sector in the work system, and we are all confident of obtaining better results during the coming period.”
Ahmed Jalal Ismail, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Holding, said: “Our efforts and aspirations to provide and establish a business environment that encourages the adoption of a circular economy across the value chain are an integral part of our drive towards the responsible use of our resources. During the meeting, the UAE Circular Economy Council reviewed the UAE Circular Economic Landscape Report for 2023, which highlighted the pioneering efforts and actions taken by partners across the UAE to support the country’s transition towards a circular economy.
The report showcases a variety of initiatives and projects, each illustrating how strategic partners have scaled up their circular economy solutions across various economic sectors. The report highlighted several projects that include circular design, environmentally friendly manufacturing practices, and many innovations in waste management and promoting sustainable consumption. The report also reviews the breadth and depth of the measures that have been taken. This embodies the spirit of innovation, design and forward-thinking that characterizes the UAE’s transition towards a circular economy.

During the meeting, the latest developments related to circular economy policies were reviewed within the circular economy agenda in the relevant authorities in the country, including the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, the Ministry of Economy, and the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. The “Emirates Laboratory for the Circular Economy proposal” was also discussed. Another proposal to host the Circular Economy Forum during the COP28 Conference of the Parties, which will be held in Dubai at the end of next November. The developments in work at the Lootah biofuel station were also reviewed.
The Council members were briefed on all the circular economy practices of the Majid Al Futtaim Group in supporting the circular economy system in the country.

The third meeting of the Emirates Circular Economy Council witnessed a distinguished attendance that included various officials from federal and local authorities and the private sector.
The meeting was attended by His Excellency Omar Ahmed Suwayna Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, His Excellency Nawal Al Hosani, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Green Development and Climate Change Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, and His Excellency Engineer Atheeba Al Qaidi, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Sustainable Communities Sector at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, in addition to H.E. Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Municipality and Planning Department in Ajman, His Excellency Engineer Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company (Tadweer), and His Excellency Khaled Al Huraimel, CEO of Sharjah Environment Company (Be’ah).
The meeting was also attended by Engineer Aisha Al Abdouli, Director of the Green Development Department at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, Samar Al Manhrawi, Senior Vice President of Sustainability Services – Majid Al Futtaim Group, and Anis Nassar, Head of the Resource Recycling Department – World Economic Forum, along with a number of international specialists in the circular economy.
