Details: According to them, the purpose of the meeting is to try to stabilize relations between the countries. One White House official noted that there is a “strong” possibility that this meeting will take place.
Another senior US presidential administration official told the publication that Biden was looking forward to meeting with Xi, but “nothing has been confirmed yet.”
White House officials say these plans will be strengthened when Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrives in Washington in the coming weeks.
If the meeting takes place, it will be the first between the leaders of the world’s two largest economies since they met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia in November 2022. At the time, Biden and Xi stressed the importance of face-to-face diplomacy and expressed hope that they could get US-China relations back on track.
Let us remind you:
After American fighters in early February 2023 Chinese spy balloon shot down, who flew into the United States, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken rescheduled his visit to China. China tried to convince that the balloon had lost its route and accused the United States of overreacting, and later Beijing stated that it had allegedly been recording over its own territory since the beginning of 2022 more than a dozen such devices from the USA. The White House denied these accusations. Since then, there have been contacts between the US and China, but they have been rare. Tensions between the two countries have risen due to China’s behavior in the South China Sea, aggressive actions towards Taiwan and Russia’s all-out war against Ukraine. However, in September Blinken meets with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Earlier, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Army, General Mark Milley, said that the Chinese balloon shot down in early February did not collect intelligence data.
