HARDERWIJK (ANP) The numbers of participants in population screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer and colon cancer continue to decline, according to the RIVM health institute. “This decline has been going on for years, with a low point in corona year 2020. Although there was a recovery in 2021, the figures for 2022 are again lower than before the corona period,” the organization said.

The percentage of invitees who participated in the breast cancer population survey fell from 73 percent in 2021 to almost 71 percent in 2022, the RIVM counted. In colon cancer research the rate went from 71 to 68 percent and in cervical cancer there was a decrease from 54 to 46 percent.

The RIVM is investigating why people participate less often. It already knows that some of these people are simply not really reached, often people with a lower income, lower education and/or a migration background.

According to the institute, in 2022, a form or pre-stage of cancer would be found in thousands of people through population studies. If detected early, treatment is often less drastic.
