MAKASSAR, KOMPAS.com – Indonesian lifter from Makassar, South Sulawesi (Sulsel) Rahmat Erwin Abdullah won the gold medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, China in the men’s 73 kg weightlifting category.
Even more proud, this 22 year old weightlifter managed to break the Asian and world record after recording a total lift of 359 kg, consisting of 158 kg in the snatch and 201 kg in the clean and jerk.
Rahmat’s mother, Ami Asun Budiono, also feels proud of the achievements made by her son in this Asian continental sports competition.
“As a parent, I am quite proud because this is the second highest achievement after the Olympics,” said Ami to KOMPAS.com when met at her residence on Jalan Cendrawasih Lr 7A, Mamajang District, Makassar, Thursday (5/10/2023).
Ami said that the achievements achieved by her only child were her dreams. Because Rahmat wants to surpass the record of his father, Erwin Abdullah, who won a silver medal at the 2002 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Busan, South Korea.
“Alhamdulillah, my son’s dream is to break his father’s record. Thank God, in this ASEAN Games, his dream has been achieved (having) surpassed his father’s record,” he said.
He also thanked the General Management (PB) of the All Indonesian Weightlifting Association (PABSI) who had provided support to Rahmat.
This 53 year old woman also admitted that before and after competing in the championship, Rahmat always contacted her to ask for blessings.
“Yesterday when he called he shouted (said) Mama, but I already knew (I got gold) because I also watched the live broadcast,” said Ami.
“If Rahmat competes, we will always watch it, so how can we watch it. If you search on YouYube, you can’t find a friend who will tell you where you can watch it,” said the former lifter who won silver at the 1995 Chiang Mai Thailand SEA Games.
Ami further revealed that after competing in the Chinese Asean Games, Rahmat plans to return to Jakarta on Sunday (8/10/2023).
He said Rahmat did not immediately return to Makassar. Because he lives at the national training camp (pelatnas) at Mess Kwini, Jakarta. “He will return to Makassar at the beginning of the new year or the end of the year,” he said.
