Former US President Donald Trump announced his willingness to temporarily assume the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, until Republicans decide who will preside over the House after the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy.
Trump said in an interview with Fox News: “They asked me to speak as a unifying figure, as I have many friends in Congress.”
He continued: “If they were not able to vote, they asked me if I would consider the possibility of assuming the position of Speaker of the Council so that they could choose someone for the long term, because I am running for president.”
He added: “They asked me if I would do it for a short period of time for the party, while they reach the conclusion. I will not do it because I want to, but rather I will do it in case of necessity, in case they cannot make their decision.”
Trump did not clarify who exactly asked him to consider the possibility of serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives.
He expressed his readiness to assume the presidency of the Council for a period of 30, 60 or 90 days, adding that he would do so “for the sake of the party only.”
It is noteworthy that Kevin McCarthy was removed from the position of Speaker of the US House of Representatives last Tuesday after he was accused of violating the promises he made to himself during his election as Speaker of the House last January.
