The Hollywood Journey of Godzilla: From Japan to New York

Monsters always do well in movies. Large, dangerous beasts apparently appeal to the imagination. Godzilla is one of the most famous monsters in film history.

The deadly giant lizard Godzilla originates from Japan. He has appeared in films there since 1954.

After more than forty years in Japan, Godzilla moved to Hollywood in 1998. This means that the towering lizard is not stomping over Japanese cities, but is running amok in New York.

How does Godzilla get there? After French nuclear tests get out of hand, a lizard that has grown to bizarre proportions due to radioactive radiation sets sail for the Big Apple.

Once in New York, biologist Nick Tatopoulos (Matthew Broderick) discovers that Godzilla is not only destroying buildings, it also appears that she is building a nest. And when animals build a nest, it often means that they start laying eggs. One mega lizard is dangerous enough, but adding all the little Godzillas will of course only make it worse.

That’s why Nick and French secret agent Philippe Roaché (Jean Reno) go in search of those eggs to destroy them before they hatch.

Godzilla

Godzilla may have made the transition to Hollywood, but that does not mean that Japan’s Toho Studios simply outsourced his creation. The production company gave director Roland Emmerich a document with rules that he had to adhere to.

That was quite a laundry list: 75 pages of do’s and don’ts Godzilla. From its appearance (Godzilla is allowed to have a maximum of three toes on each foot and four fingers on each hand) to the type of film Emmerich would make.

He wasn’t allowed to make fun of Godzilla. Also important: Japan’s most famous movie monster was not allowed to die.
