Škoda Kodiaq: Powertrain Options and Speculations for the RS Version

The sister Volkswagen Tiguan will offer a 265k two-liter as well as a 272k plug-in hybrid variant. Not one of them has yet appeared under the hood of the new Kodiaq, but the automaker is also hiding information about the RS version.

The newly introduced Škoda Kodiaq revealed almost everything about itself, including what powertrains they will have under the hood. However, one engine was missing; the automaker said there will be two gasoline and two diesel versions.

She published the performance of both versions of the two-liter TDI, i.e. 150 and 193 horsepower, but for the gasoline engines she spoke exclusively about the basic version in the form of a fifteen-hundred-liter model with a mild hybrid, probably labeled TSI e-Tec, just like the Octavia.

The more powerful petrol engine is still shrouded in mystery, but the British magazine Autocar speculates that it could be the two-liter EA888 from the sister Volkswagen Tiguan and also from the Golf GTI. Such a motorization could receive the designation RS at Škoda.

The sharp version of the Kodiaq has not yet been presented, and Johannes Neft, technical director of Škoda’s development, did not reveal much. “We are working on it,” he just said. However, the magazine’s sources from within the automaker indicate that the success of the diesel and, after modernization, the gasoline Kodiaq RS requires a successor. It should be introduced already next year.

Will it be a more powerful version of the plug-in hybrid? “Not necessarily,” Neft said, hinting that the range-topping Kodiaq will retain all-wheel drive. The mentioned engine, which is obviously a hot candidate for the power unit, offers 265 horsepower in the Tiguan. If the Kodiaq RS also got it, it would represent a twenty horsepower increase in performance.

The Tiguan also offers a weaker, two-hundred-horsepower version of this engine, as well as a more powerful plug-in hybrid with a combined output of 272 horsepower. Whether the new Kodiaq will also get these engines, the second one perhaps in the RS iV version, we can only speculate for now – after all, just like the conventional “heresy” – and hope.
