The Philosophy of Life: Embracing Transience and Spreading Love and Support

Why this particular number?

“That title is my philosophy of life. I live every day consciously and intensively. I am happy every morning when I wake up. Because that is not as obvious as many of us think. Every day, almost 500 people are no longer there the next day. on.

We rush out the door, busy thinking about everything that needs to be done that day and forget to say goodbye to our loved one. While it could be over in an instant. You walk under a tram or you get sick and you’re gone. With this song I want to give a warm message to my dear wife, my family and friends. That I love them and I want them to live on with that thought.”

What does it say about your life?

“The message of this song is realistic and inspiring. It is about the transience of life and I often have to deal with that. I am active in the neighborhood where I have lived for more than twenty years. I like to be a support point for everyone in the neighborhood. I provide care for the dying and am a confidant. My favorite thing is to talk to people. Then I speak to a mother of five children, who all live abroad. She has cared for her all her life and is still dependent on neighbors for messages or a new lamp. Or someone who has addiction problems, whom I help to realize that he really has the problem himself lead can take in his own life.

Recently I was sitting on a terrace and a homeless woman walked by. I invited her to my table, bought her a hamburger and a beer and listened to her stories. How she came to the Netherlands for love and, due to a few setbacks, now lived on the streets. Then you see people looking: what is that man doing? Really, I was looked away on the terrace.

It is important that we realize how good we have it. How often do I hear from people who are sick or about to die: ‘don’t work so hard’. And so it is. Psychologists’ waiting lists are full of people who need a lot of care, attention and love. Moreover, I think there is also loneliness. Let us support each other more as colleagues, family, friends and neighbors. Talking to each other more, as was very common in the past. Rather give your time and money to those you love and look out for each other. We can spend a lot of money on ourselves, with lots of beautiful things, but we can also share with someone else. That’s what really makes you happy.”

Where do you prefer to listen to music?

“In the kitchen, because I like to cook. Or at home, but I’m usually out of the house. When I’m alone in the car, I turn up the radio nice and loud. I prefer to listen to reggae. Activist music with a political statement, as Get Up, Stand Up by Bob Marley. A call to everyone to take responsibility in society and demand your rights. That touches me, because most people wait on the sidelines. And on what?

At the same time, I also continue to learn. From my demented father, for example, who asked me how long I would continue to help a destructive friend. He opened my eyes. Sometimes it’s just enough.”

How many lists do you have on Spotify?

“None, because I don’t know how to do it. I do have preference lists on YouTube, that’s a bit the same. I love music. Music gives me zest for life and pleasure. I have almost 1000 CDs, 1500 cassette tapes and all the equipment at home to be able to listen. Even a hi-fi tower like that, which I have been very careful with for 25 years.”

What is your guilty pleasure?

My Number One by Gregory Isaacs. A love song and an ode to my dear wife Alice. I often play this for her, and then I ask if I can remain her number one. I have done everything I wanted and she supports me in everything I do. I also try to make the world a better place on a micro level.”
