Korean women’s hockey defeated Japan in a close shootout and advanced to the finals of the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games.
Korea, led by coach Han Jin-soo, drew 2-2 in the semifinals with Japan held at the Archer Canal Sports Park in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China on the 5th and then won 4-3 in the shootout.
Korea will play the final against the host country, China, on the 7th.
Korea, which failed to win a medal after finishing fourth at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, the previous competition, is attempting to regain hegemony at the Asian Games nine years after the 2014 Incheon Games.
The winning team of this competition will also qualify for the finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
On this day, Korea took a 2-0 lead with goals from Seo Jeong-eun (Asan City Hall) in the first quarter and Park Seung-ae (KT) in the third quarter.
However, they gave up a goal to Shiho Kobayakawa in the 3rd minute of the 4th quarter, and allowed Oikawa Shihori to tie the score with about a minute left in the game.
In the shootout that followed, Korea was tied 3-3, and Jo Hye-jin (Asan City Hall) scored to make it 4-3, and goalkeeper Kim Eun-ji (Pyeongtaek City Hall) blocked Japan’s Miyu Suzuki’s shot, achieving a dramatic victory.
