Improvement Plans and Challenges for the Breisgau S-Bahn Commission

The future commission for the Breisgau S-Bahn met. Some improvements are announced, but problems remain unsolved for the time being.

The future commission for the Breisgau S-Bahn has met. Short-term and medium-term improvements are announced again, but problems are also identified that obviously cannot be solved so quickly. “Currently, many trains in network 9a (Breisgau East-West) are not running with the expected capacity,” says the statement from the state of Baden-Württemberg. The contractually agreed kilometers that were driven with the specified capacity could recently only be fulfilled to 67 percent on the east-west axis, as the published operating data for the Breisgau S-Bahn document. This data is from June and is currently the most current publicly available data. Between December and June, capacity was only filled to around 75 percent on average. A lack of spare parts and wheel sets that had to be replaced earlier than planned led to limited vehicle availability, as the state announced and as the railway recently confirmed to the BZ. Added to this is the lack of staff in the Freiburg railway workshop. Since the beginning of the school year, additional buses have been running from Himmelreich and Ihringen during rush hour.

In the future, passengers will be informed even more transparently about train cancellations and delays. For example, train positions and utilization should be graphically displayed online on maps, as stated in a statement. Investments were also made in operational quality at Kaiserstuhl, for example at the train stations in Riegel, Nimburg and Eichstetten, as well as in control and safety technology, according to the state’s statement. Furthermore, it is reiterated that they want to continue to expand the route from Freiburg via Breisach to Colmar. The basic investigation and the first parts of the preliminary planning have been completed and now it is time to initiate the next planning phase together with the French side.

The long-term goal is also a 15-minute cycle in the Freiburg metropolitan area. This will be included in all expansion projects on the sections between Freiburg and Gottenheim, Bad Krozingen, Kirchzarten and Riegel-Malterdingen. “This will make further improvements tangible for people. But rural areas will also benefit from this. Outside the metropolitan area, the Breisgau -S-Bahn will run every half hour in the future,” says Transport Minister Winfried Hermann.

Freiburg’s mayor, Martin Horn, said in the statement that improvements could be seen in the Breisgau S-Bahn, but the result was still not satisfactory: “Despite all the progress, we must continue to remain self-critical and honest. The users of the Breisgau S-Bahn that there is still a lot to do in terms of reliability and capacity of the trains. We will therefore work for further improvements.” Hanno Hurth, district administrator for the Emmendingen district, sees a positive outcome
Development: “In the Emmendingen district, we are relieved to note that the reliability of the Elztalbahn, which is very important to us, has recently stabilized; the failure rate of the trains has noticeably reduced. It is important to establish this reliability and, if possible, improve it. ”
