(CNN) – Former US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he did not encourage Republican Representative Matt Gaetz to fire former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Trump added while leaving the courtroom in New York, when he was asked whether he had encouraged Gaetz to put forward the vote that led to the ouster of McCarthy, and he replied, “No, I did not.”
On Monday, Matt Gaetz submitted a memorandum calling for the dismissal of Kevin McCarthy, in a “rare” step. Gaetz took that step in response to the House of Representatives’ approval, on Saturday, of the bill that would spare the government from shutting down, despite the opposition of some Republican representatives to some of its provisions.
On Wednesday, Trump also continued his criticism of the lack of a jury in the civil lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James after he was accused of fraudulently inflating his wealth, due to an article in New York state law that was used to file the complaint.
“This trial is a complete witch hunt, and I should have the right to a jury just as anyone else has the right to a jury,” Trump said during a break in the trial, which entered its third day. “I have no right to a jury,” he added. “This is ridiculous.”
