NEW JERSEY — The drive for sustainability and preserving nature as much as possible is a reality that has driven the growth of the renewable energy market over the years.
With this in mind, WalletHub analyzed the 100 largest cities in the US to determine the greenest, taking into account clean energy, recycling, greenhouse gas emissions per capita and a number of other key indicators to compile the ranking.
It turns out that a New Jersey city is among the least “green” in the country.
Newark, New Jersey, ranks 94th out of 100 when it comes to “greenest” cities, meaning it is the seventh least sustainable large city in the country.
The poor overall ranking of WalletHub is due to the city’s ranking in the individual categories of environment (#93 out of 100 cities), transportation (#28 out of 100 cities), energy sources (#87 out of 100 cities), and style of life and politics (no. 57 of 100).
When it comes to specific metrics, Newark also ranked as the city with the second-lowest farmers market per capita. But it’s not all bad news for the tri-state area. New York ranks as the fourth city with the highest number of farmers markets per capita. (New York ranked 25th overall among the country’s greenest big cities, according to WalletHub.)
Another New Jersey city performed well on other specific metrics. WalletHub ranked Jersey City as the No. 1 city with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions per capita. It is also the city with the second-lowest percentage of commuters who drive, just behind New York, which ranks first in this metric.
Although Jersey City ranked well in certain specific metrics, overall it ranked as the 76th “greenest” city in the country.
So which big city is the “greenest” of them all? That honor goes to San Diego.
