Some beliefs die hard. So, most people think that the famous slogan “I love NY” applies to the city of the same name. It is written in large letters, with the word “love” actually replaced by a large red heart. The first two signs are written above the last two.
If you go to New York, you won’t be able to escape this logo. It’s everywhere, printed on t-shirts, mugs and all souvenir items. Despite appearances, however, this logo was not originally imagined for New York City.
In fact, this slogan, “He loves NY”, was to orchestrate a vast promotional campaign, launched in 1977, not for the city, but for the State of New York. This state, whose capital is Albany, does contain the city of New York, which is called “New York City”, precisely to distinguish it from the state of the same name.
The design of this logo is entrusted to the graphic designer Milton Glaser, also known for the cover of a CD Bob Dylan. But this logo truly represented the artist’s greatest claim to fame. He indicated that he was inspired, for his development, by a certain type of font, which gives its style to the logo, but also by an equally famous work. This is the famous “Love” sculpture which, as its name suggests, is made up of the very enlarged letters of the word “Love”. The first two letters rise above the last two, as in the New York logo, the “O” being inclined.
This sculpture, which we owe to the artist Robert Indiana, is located in Love Park in Philadelphia. The success of the promotional campaign was such that, very quickly, the “I love NY” logo was featured on clothing and multiple media, becoming in fact the symbol of the city.
Since then, this logo has been adopted by many cities, which have not found better ways to promote themselves.
