Preventing Wood Deterioration and Building Protection: Training and Techniques

Training atmosphere in preventing wood deterioration and building protection.

SAMARINDA – Having a house or building made of wood has many advantages. Among them, it is environmentally friendly, has good thermal insulation, looks naturally aesthetic, is flexible to design, has good adaptability to air humidity, and most importantly, is easy to maintain.

Behind these advantages, wooden materials apparently have enemies, namely pest attacks such as termites, cockroaches, fleas, ants, beetles, or other living creatures that use wooden components in buildings, furniture, and building contents as their homes.

Getting rid of these pests can be a difficult task if you don’t know how, but it can be easy if you know the key.

Some time ago, precisely on October 12 2022, the Bachelor of Applied Wood Engineering Study Program, Department of Forest Product Technology, Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic revealed the secrets of maintaining wood for this building material.

This activity was carried out in the courtyard of the Loa Bakung Samarinda Subdistrict Office in the form of Community Service in the Applied Wood Engineering Undergraduate Study Program at the Samarinda State Agricultural Polytechnic. In the training, steps to prevent wood deterioration and protect buildings were explained.

According to the Head of activities, Dr. Ir. F. Dwi Joko Priyono, MP, if people know and understand how to prevent wood deterioration, then protecting wood from pests will be easy. Joko realizes that this knowledge is not generally known, even though its benefits are extraordinary for maintaining the sustainability of residences from decay or damage.

If the building is too damaged due to pest attacks, the costs that must be spent on repairs are much greater than the maintenance costs.

Joko explained that one method that can be applied to protect wood from pest attacks is the baiting method, namely controlling pests through the fumigation method. He believes this method is able to prevent and control building pests, especially in eradicating termites, cockroaches, fleas, ants, beetles and other living creatures.

Joko emphasized that this simple knowledge is important for the general public, especially community leaders, to know, because this knowledge will provide enlightenment and encourage a better life.

“For this reason, the Undergraduate Study Program in Applied Wood Engineering considers it necessary to carry out training activities like this so that there is a comprehensive understanding and sufficient skills about how termites attack buildings and how to deal with termites and other building pests for the community,” explained Joko.

Joko also said that the people of Loa Bakung Village, Samarinda, showed very high enthusiasm for this activity. This was proven by the presence of 40 participants who filled the training room from the opening ceremony to practical activities in the field.

Apart from that, Loa Bakung Village officers also continue to help in all aspects of activities, from room preparation, bidding and participant selection, to handling the opening event. Even the Head of Loa Bakung Subdistrict, Babinsa, and Babinkamtibmas were also present at the training activity.

Apart from that, this training activity was also attended by the Head of the Forest Products Technology Department, Dr. Abdul Rasyid Zarta, S.Hut, MP, and Head of the Applied Wood Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, Dr. Ir. Syafi’i, MP, as well as a training team consisting of lecturers, educational laboratory staff (PLP), and students.

Activity participants carry out their own termite and building pest control activities under the supervision of instructors/training guides. The technology introduced to participants includes the use of equipment and skills in operating disinfectant equipment to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses (including Covid-19), fogging to deal with mosquitoes and flying insects, termite chemical barriers to control termites before and after construction, baiting application techniques as termite bait, and finally, fumigation activities to deal with building pests that are difficult to overcome with ordinary techniques.

As evaluation material, the Training Team made observations of participants to see the increase in knowledge and skills provided through questionnaires before and after the training.

From the questionnaire, data and information were obtained that describe the level of usefulness and increase in knowledge and skills resulting from the training provided. Apart from that, this can also be used as an evaluation of the success of the training activities that have been carried out.
