On Wednesday, the money-sharing service Vipps sent out a notice that they have made changes to their guidelines.
Vipps usually only notifies if they make major changes that may affect consumers’ privacy or rights.
Now the company confirms to Nettavisen that they are increasing the price of the “gift wrapping” service. It increases from NOK 5 to NOK 8, starting on 4 December this year.
– The direct cost for us in connection with gift wrap is that we have dedicated developers and designers who work with the service and constantly improve and adjust the technology used, confirms communication advisor at Vipps, Cato Gjertsen, to Nettavisen.
He adds that they have informed about the change on its website.
Right before Christmas
In a press release from Vipps on Wednesday morning, the company writes that in 2022 they had a growth in the number of online payments of 52 percent. In the same period, the number of outlets with Vipps online increased by 28 per cent.
So far this year, the growth in the number of online Vipps payments is 32 per cent, and the number of outlets with Vipps online is 29 per cent. It is happening at the same time that the finances of AS Norge are struggling, they write.
– This means that there are more people using the app this year, especially companies, than last year. But that does not mean that we will make a profit, says Gjertsen.
– Was it a calculated choice on your part to introduce this change just before Christmas?
– This is a service that is used a lot in connection with birthdays, Christmas and other celebrations. We make a living by selling services that people and Norwegian companies use, and that they see value in. It is a small but important service that is used to mark special occasions.
When asked by Nettavisen if it costs something for Vipps every time a consumer uses the gift paper service, Gjertsen replies:
– The gift wrap itself costs nothing. But it is a service we offer people, and which many want to use.

Introduced fee
Last year, Vipps confirmed to Nettavisen that they would introduce a fee of a higher amount.
Until August 2022, this fee could be avoided by dividing a larger transfer into several smaller transfers, so that they all consist of NOK 5,000 or less. A Vipps transfer of NOK 8,000, for example, has been more economical to divide into 5,000 + 3,000.
This trick can no longer be used.
Vipps now practices a 24-hour rule for amounts over NOK 5,000 to the same recipient, even if the amount is divided into smaller transfers.
This means that if you transfer NOK 5,000 to a person, you must wait one day before transferring more to avoid the fee.
