The bus deviated from the road and fell near railway lines in the Mestre area, which is connected by a bridge to the city of Venice, located in northern Italy.

The cause of the accident was not clear. Renato Borasso, a member of the Venice City Council, said that there is a possibility that investigations are considering is that the driver fell ill suddenly before the accident. The driver, a 40-year-old Italian, died in the accident.

Borasso added that the bus was carrying 40 passengers, of whom 21 died and 18 were injured. He added that the death toll may rise because some of the injured are in critical condition. The Venice Municipal Council said that the injured were taken to nearby hospitals, and that four of them were in serious condition.

Officials said the bus fell 15 meters onto power lines and caught fire at around 7:45 pm local time (1745 GMT).

“The scene is horrific. I am speechless,” Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Venice Governor Michele De Bari said five of the victims were Ukrainian and one was German.

The Italian news agency ANSA reported that the bus was also carrying passengers from France and Croatia.

“The bus was completely destroyed,” De Bari told Sky Italia television.

“Firefighters had difficulty removing so many bodies,” he said, adding that two children were among the victims.

Prime Minister Georgia Meloni expressed her condolences, saying in a statement that the hearts of government officials were with “the victims, their families and friends.”
