The Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, Vladimir Svet, called the free county public transport a universal social support in its nature, which more and more people have started to use.
“It is unfortunate that the state is giving up free inter-county buses, which were important for residents and also supported regional politics. Free county public transport is by its nature a universal social support, which more and more people used,” Svet told BNS. “At the same time, the government plans to increase taxes, which will increase people’s spending. Free public transport is an important alternative to owning a car, and making it chargeable has a negative impact on both the social aspect and the environment,” added the deputy mayor.
Svet confirmed that public transport will be free for Tallinn residents next year as well, but he could not yet say whether the ticket price for non-Tallinn residents will increase next year. “Pricing depends on various circumstances, such as the increase in fuel prices, for example. At the moment, it is premature to say whether there will be a need to increase public transport ticket prices for non-Tallinn residents next year. These discussions will take place during the next year’s budget,” said the deputy mayor.
The Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture proposed to establish a ticket price of 1.50 euros and a monthly ticket price of 20 euros on county bus lines from next year.
