Far-right Republican representative and opponent of McCarthy, Matt Geitz, introduced a motion that would have the chairman removed from office. Gates and other far-right Republicans are unhappy that McCarthy pushed through a temporary extension of government funding last Saturday with the help of Democratic votes. Many Democrats believe he lacks leadership skills.
Earlier today, McCarthy said an attempt to oust him from the presidency would not succeed and he would remain in charge of the lower house of Congress.
