A bus carrying foreign tourists crashed on an overpass in the Mestre area near Venice, northern Italy, at around 7:45 pm on the 3rd (local time), killing more than 20 people.

According to foreign media such as AP, AFP, and Reuters, Venetian authorities announced that at least 21 people were killed and 18 were injured in this accident.

“Identification work is continuing,” Veneto Governor Luca Zaia said. “The victims include not only Italians but also people of several nationalities.”

It was not confirmed whether Koreans were on board. According to the Consulate General in Milan, a Ukrainian tourist group was on the bus involved in the accident, and the identities of the remaining foreigners on board are currently being confirmed.

A Venice city official said the bus was returning to a campsite from Venice’s historic center carrying tourists and confirmed that some of the victims were Ukrainians.

Local media reported that the bus broke through a protective wall while traveling on a road in the Mestre region, fell near the railroad tracks about 30 meters below, and caught fire after hitting a power line. This area is connected to the main island of Venice by a bridge.

At present, the cause of the accident is unclear. Matteo Salvini, Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, said it could have been because the driver, 40, suddenly fell ill or felt unwell.

Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro posted a photo of the scene on
