NEW YORK — A Long Island motel allegedly involved in drug sales and at the center of a sex trafficking conspiracy has been ordered sold, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced Tuesday.
Tuesday’s sale of the Sayville Motor Lodge is for $2 million. Proceeds from the sale will go to the property’s previous lenders and the remaining proceeds will be used to compensate victims of the alleged crime.
According to court documents, the co-owners and a motel employee who also lived at the motel facilitated criminal activity there and profited from the prostitution and narcotics activity that took place at the location.
The group was allegedly aware of at least one minor trafficking victim. They also allegedly warned traffickers and women who were engaged in prostitution when law enforcement was on the scene.
From approximately 2014 to 2018, two men allegedly operated their sex trafficking rings out of the motel in coordination with the motel’s co-owners and employee.
The motel’s co-owners and employee benefited from drug trafficking that occurred openly at the motel, the attorney general’s office said.
“The defendants allowed customers to freely consume drugs, including heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine, in plain sight and in motel rooms,” the district attorney’s office said. “Like those responsible for sex trafficking, the drug dealers paid the Sayville defendants for the privilege of selling drugs at the Sayville Motor Lodge.”
In total, six people were arrested in connection with the investigation, including two people in their 70s who were co-owners of the motel. Information about the defendants’ attorneys was not immediately known.
Breon Peace, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and Vincent DeMarco, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York, announced the sale of the property.
“As a result of this sale, Sayville Motor Lodge is no longer ground zero for an insidious source of income for prostitution and narcotics trafficking, and a blight on the surrounding community,” Peace said. “Instead, the property will be repurposed by its new owner for the benefit of Long Island residents.”
