Bohumil Modrý, the best hockey goalkeeper in the world, who played a significant role in the first international successes of Czechoslovak hockey after the Second World War. In 1948, he received an offer to go catch in the NHL. His stellar sports career and happy family life were destroyed in 1950 by a fabricated political process. Along with other representative hockey players, he was accused of espionage and high treason and sentenced to 15 years in hard prison and forced labor in uranium mines. As a result of imprisonment and radiation in 1963, he died prematurely at the age of 46.
In Roman Vávra Modrý’s documentary, Blanka’s daughter tells the story of her father. From his sporting beginnings and world successes to dramatic life moments that affected the whole family. He uncovers the facts that led to the arrest of the admired Bóži, as Modrý’s friends called him. In a very personal confession about the many years of injustice, when she had to fight with her mother and sister for Modrý’s rehabilitation, she reveals the tragic connections that led to the trial of Modrý et al., which became an exemplary case of the communist regime’s power repression to warn not only top athletes, but also to all others who would like to leave the republic.
