The bus that crashed from the Mestre overpass, in which around twenty people died, was not carrying out scheduled service – as we initially learned – but was an NCC vehicle, rented for its guests by a campsite in Marghera. It is a coach from the “La Linea” company, which normally operates the connection between the campsite and Venice.
The bus flew about 10 meters: The accident occurred just before 8pm on the overpass of the link road that leads from Mestre to Marghera and the A4 motorway. In the first downhill section the bus, for reasons to be ascertained, broke through the parapet, fell down and ended up between a warehouse and the tracks of the Mestre station, catching fire. Some of the first victims recovered apparently burned to death. The tourists on the bus who were victims of this evening’s accident on the Mestre flyover were headed to the ‘Hu’ campsite in Marghera. The property is located at the beginning of Strada Romea and provides a shuttle service to Venice, which leaves right outside the entrance. At the moment the campsite is closed and the staff are not making any statements. The campsite, which also has a large indoor swimming pool, mainly hosts foreign tourists.
The toll from the accident which occurred in Mestre/Marghera this evening and communicated by the Prefecture to the rescuers is 21 dead, 12 injured and some missing, a number that should fluctuate between 4 and 5. The work of the rescuers is still ongoing – law enforcement sources told ANSA – and an official death toll is not yet possible. There are also two children among the 21 victims currently confirmed in the accident involving a bus in Mestre. The bodies of the two children have already been recovered.
The railway line between Mestre and Venice was suspended due to the accident. The bus broke through the fence of the Vempa overpass and fell into the void near the tracks. Local health authority 3 of Venice has activated the “major emergencies” protocol which involves making all hospital emergency rooms available and calling staff back to work.
