Only 50 to 1,000 ethnic Armenians remain in Nagorno-Karabakh, the UN mission has concluded.

Before the Azerbaijani offensive, an estimated 120,000 Armenians lived in Nagorno-Karabakh.

After the September 19 lightning offensive of the Azerbaijani army, the authorities of the Armenian Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, which existed “de facto” for more than 30 years, actually capitulated to Baku the next day, and the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh fled en masse to Armenia.

On October 1, at the invitation of Azerbaijan, a UN mission arrived in Nagorno-Karabakh for the first time in 30 years to get acquainted with the situation and assess what humanitarian aid the people of Nagorno-Karabakh need.

UN staff went from Agdam to Stepanakert. In the visited parts of the city, the mission did not find any damage to the civil infrastructure, including hospitals, schools and residential buildings, as well as cultural and religious objects, according to the UN mission’s report.

However, the mission said it was surprised by how quickly local residents left their homes. Since the conclusion of the ceasefire, the UN has received no reports of violence against civilians in Nagorno-Karabakh.

The press representative of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on Monday that 100,625 refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh have arrived in Armenia.
