Fast food chain Chipotle is exploring the use of robotics in its food preparation process. The restaurant is working with food service platform Hyphen to develop a prototype robot that can assemble salads and bowls. When a digital order includes a salad or bowl, it is directed to the automated system.
The system includes a conveyor belt along which a container moves. Dispensers add the requested ingredients to the container, and at the end of the line, the system lifts the bowl to allow an employee to add the finishing touches and place the lid.
Chipotle estimates that this robotic assembly line can handle about 65% of its digital orders. However, the system does not eliminate the need for human workers altogether, as employees are still required to assemble burritos and other items. The introduction of robotics into the food preparation process is seen as a way to increase efficiency and speed up the service.
This is not the first time Chipotle has experimented with automation. The chain recently tested a robot called Autocado to assist in making its guacamole. Chipotle has not ruled out the possibility of testing dishwashing robots in the near future.
As the food industry continues to explore automation, robotics are becoming increasingly common. While robots can improve efficiency and streamline operations, concerns over job displacement and the quality of human interaction remain. It is likely that robots will play a larger role in food service establishments in the coming years, but humans will still be essential for certain tasks and maintaining the overall customer experience.
