The Impact of Social Media on Artistic Expressions: A Conversation with Bassist José Rafael Torres

For José Rafael Torres “Catire”, bassist of Los Amigos Invisibles, social networks and digital platforms have affected the conception of artistic expressions, since today numbers matter more. “If it has a billion views it must be good, but that is not culture or art. “It is simply a business phenomenon, and it is not necessarily quality art,” said the musician in an interview.

“Maybe there will be an incredible huapango cultural group, and they are great people, but maybe they don’t have the support, they don’t have likes or views, the culture is falling into that. Government institutions have to put more effort into preserving their culture, both folkloric and non-folkloric,” he added.

Although he recognizes that at some point they got carried away by that Internet “boom”, and ventured with content other than music on social networks, over time they understood that art should not revolve around the views it generates.

For them, the artist must communicate mainly through his work, and the rest must be to spread his message.

“Nowadays the message of any label is that you have to connect and stream, do this and that, and I don’t think that’s the case. I am sure that there are genuine artists, who suddenly do not let themselves be carried away by those superficialities of likes, views and streams, and continue creating their art.”

THEY RETURN TO MEXICO

After two successful presentations at the Teatro Metropólitan, the group returns once again on October 13, to continue the celebration of their album “Cool love” (released in August 2022).

Catire commented that this material, which has taken them to countries such as Spain, Germany, Portugal, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador and the United States, has given them a lot of calm, because “the fans have been able to appreciate it as a complete work , from beginning to end”.

“That has brought many people closer to the band, they still think that being a fan of this band makes sense, that has given us peace of mind to enjoy the results of the album and we take it easy.”

The musician announced that, given the upcoming end of this promotional tour, next year they could return to the studio to start working on their next material. According to him, they will follow the process they have carried out with their previous projects, to include topics that they already had in the pipeline.

“We are always creating things that were suddenly left in the trunks and suddenly we decided to dust them off and get back to it. Yes, we have a starting point,” he concluded.
