MijnenergieIkea Netherlands will stop the sale of gas hobs from January 2024. From then on, the furniture chain focuses resolutely on induction hobs. Mijnenergie.be asks the question: will this decision also be implemented in Belgium? We turned to the Swedish giant.

Netherlands vs Belgium
Ikea’s decision fits in with the Dutch ambitions to eliminate gas from one and a half million homes by 2030. By no longer offering gas hobs, it encourages customers to switch to electric cooking.
We asked the furniture giant whether it will also follow the same path in Belgium. “No, that is not an option for the time being. This is a local decision by Ikea Netherlands, which has no further impact on our offer,” spokeswoman Colombine Nicolay explains.
Natural gas-free cooking is the future
What is certain is that we will all one day cook natural gas-free. International climate agreements oblige us to stop using natural gas by 2050. Natural gas connections are already prohibited in large subdivisions and from 2025 there will be a complete ban on new construction.

Return and consumption costs
An induction hob offers a higher efficiency than a gas stove. When cooking with induction, only ten to twenty percent of the energy is lost, while with a gas fire this is several tens of percentage points higher. But does that also mean that you pay lower consumption costs with induction?
The Dutch information organization Milieu Centraal estimates the consumption of an average gas fire at 37 cubic meters of gas per year. Expressed in kilowatt hours, this means 381 kilowatt hours (kWh). From the comparator of Mijnenergie.be we deduce that the cheapest natural gas price is currently 8.04 euro cents per kilowatt hour. Cooking on gas therefore costs the average consumer 30.63 euros per year.
For an induction hob, Milieu Centraal assumes a power consumption of 175 kWh. At the lowest kilowatt-hour rate of 31.05 euro cents, the annual electricity bill is 54.34 euros.

More than 23 euros difference
Cooking with an induction hob will therefore cost you more than 23 euros more annually. Induction may prove to be more economical for owners of solar panels. With a digital meter and separate consumption and injection, it comes down to cooking as much as possible when the sun is shining.
