Solopos.com, SOLO-In fact, you don’t have to force yourself to walk 10,000 steps a day for heart health because climbing more than five stairs every day can actually reduce the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, according to a study in the journal Atherosclerosis. Check out the review on healthy info this time.
To come to this conclusion, researchers, as published by Medical Daily, Monday (2/10/2023), analyzed data from 458,860 adult participants in the UK Biobank.
They used surveys to collect information about stair-climbing, sociodemographic, and factors lifestyle participants at the start of the study and after five years. The participants were followed up for an average of 12.5 years.
The research team evaluated the relationship between stair climbing intensity and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and found that climbing more than five stairs per day can reduce the risk of ASCVD by 20 percent, thereby benefiting heart health.
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a condition where the arteries in the heart are blocked by fat or cholesterol, also known as plaque, which has the potential to trigger a heart attack.
“Climbing more than five flights of stairs [sekitar 50 langkah] per day was associated with a lower risk of developing ASCVD types, independent of susceptibility diseaset,” said the researcher quoted from Between on Tuesday (3/10/2023).
Researchers recommend climbing stairs as a low-cost, easy-to-do physical activity that can be incorporated into a daily routine.
“Climbing stairs for short periods at high intensity is a time-efficient way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and lipid profiles, especially among those who cannot achieve current physical activity recommendations,” said researcher Dr. Lu Qi, from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in Louisiana
