By the beginning of October, gas reserves in Ukraine exceeded 16 billion cubic meters. This is more than the government planned. However, almost 40% of the fuel pumped this year is gas from European traders, who only store it in Ukraine and take it back to Europe during the heating season.
According to GIE, by the beginning of October, gas reserves in Ukrainian storage facilities exceeded 16 billion cubic meters. This is higher than the government plan. However, significant volumes in underground gas storage facilities belong to foreign traders who will take the fuel back during the heating season.
In September, European companies set a record for this year by pumping almost 1 billion cubic meters into Ukrainian storage facilities. In total, according to the GTS Operator of Ukraine, during the season foreigners sent more than 2.7 billion cubic meters to the country for storage. This is 38% of all gas pumped into the country’s underground gas storage facilities this year.
This attractiveness of Ukrainian storage facilities is due to the fact that European ones are filled on average by 96%, and storage tariffs are the lowest in Europe. They are several times cheaper than in neighboring countries.
Moldova also stores its reserves in Ukraine. There are about 400 million cubic meters of gas in storage.
The Ukrainian government planned that by the heating season its own gas reserves would amount to 14.7 billion cubic meters, but so far they have grown only to 13.3 billion cubic meters. And before the cold weather, Naftogaz will no longer have time to fulfill the government task.
