First-time participant completes flawless World Championships without falling

First World Cup participation without falling

“I am very happy that I was able to complete my first World Championships without falling,” said Lena Bickel after her competition. The 19-year-old from Ticino was clearly nervous before the competition, but her relief was even greater immediately after landing on the beam, her last apparatus. Emotions gave way to tension. “I would hardly have believed at the beginning of the year that I would be able to have an almost flawless competition at my debut. I’m so happy,” says Bickel.

Even though the Ticino woman didn’t make any major mistakes on any of the four devices, it wasn’t her perfect competition. She primarily addresses the one mistake in the pirouette of her floor exercise. However, Bickel was mostly satisfied with the overall grade of 50.632 points. “I actually wanted to do a little better at gymnastics. But I can be more than satisfied with this stable performance at my first World Championships.”

The debutante showed her jumping power, especially on the starting apparatus, which she was then able to demonstrate on the vault. She sees the most potential on the uneven bars: “I can really get a lot out of this,” said Bickel. At the end, Bickel showed a very confident performance again on the trembling beam. Both the climb and the combinations seemed very safe and ensured the hoped-for positive outcome of their four-way competition and ultimately also another Olympic berth for Switzerland!
