Mayor Eric Adams discusses President Joseph Biden’s decision to extend Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelan asylum seekers.

On September 20, the secretary of national security, Alejandro Mayorkas, advertisement the expansion of temporary protected status, or TPS, to Venezuelan immigrants who are already in the United States and entered the country before July 31, 2023.

Before this extension there were already some 240,000 Venezuelans covered by TPS and this measure will add more than 472,000 people to the program.

TPS was established in 1990, and offers immigrants protection from deportation and provides work authorization. While TPS protects immigrants from deportation, this status does not offer a path to citizenship and applicants must meet other criteria such as a background check.

He registration period Initial for eligible Venezuelans who do not have TPS begins on October 3, 2023 and runs until April 2, 2025.

On October 2, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said that about 40 percent of immigrants in New York right now are Venezuelans.

Since last year, New York City has received more than 118,000 applicants from around the world and more than 61,000 migrants remain in the city’s care.

On Monday, Hochul said the New York State Department of Labor has identified 18,000 jobs offered by more than 350 employers who are willing to hire eligible immigrants for work.

So to clear up doubts about the extension of TPS for Venezuelans, we invited Marlene Galaz, director of immigrant rights policy at The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC).
