In August, after the decline recorded in July, employment began to grow again, marking +59 thousand units (+0.3%) compared to the previous month, especially among fixed-term employees (+1.3%, equal to +39 thousands). The employment rate rises to 61.5% (+0.1 points). Compared to August 2022, there was an increase of 523 thousand units (+2.3%), driven by permanent employees (+3.7%, equal to +550 thousand). This was reported by Istat.
In August, the total unemployment rate fell to 7.3% (-0.2 points compared to the previous month), the youth unemployment rate to 22.0% (-0.1 points). Again in the monthly comparison, the number of people looking for work decreased by 62 thousand units (-3.2%), involving both men and women and affecting all age groups.
Unemployment rate at 14-year low
The unemployment rate fell to 7.3% in August, reaching its lowest level in over 14 years: you have to go back to January 2009 to find the same level. This is what emerges from Istat data. This is also a lower level than that recorded during the pandemic and the lockdown: in April 2020 it had fallen to 7.5%.
Unemployment falls to 6.4% in the eurozone in August
In August the euro area unemployment rate fell to 6.4%, from 6.5% in July. In the EU it rose to 5.9%, from 6.0% in the previous month. Eurostat reports this. In Italy it is estimated to have fallen to 7.3%, from 7.5% in July. Among the countries for which data is provided, the highest values are in Spain (11.5%), and the lowest in Czechia (2.5%). Youth unemployment falls to 13.8% (from 13.9%) in the Eurozone, while it remains stable in the EU at 14%. In Italy it drops to 22% from 22.1% in July.
