The Struggles of University Students: Financial Difficulties and Mental Health

Study is not always an enjoyable journey of knowledge and learning. It is also a difficult stage that requires many sacrifices, and sometimes it turns into a station of suffering, especially when it comes to very difficult majors, or when the student at the university is obliged to be patient with limited or even almost non-existent financial income.

A new study says that university students are more vulnerable to depression than their peers who go to work, and the main reason is the financial difficulties facing students. This study contradicts previous research that talked about the lack of psychological differences between students and their peers.

According to what the Guardian newspaper reported from the author of the study, Dr. Tayla McCloud, a researcher in the Department of Psychiatry at University College London, increasing financial pressures, coupled with anxiety due to the necessity of obtaining strong results, could form a link between declining mental health and study.

Students in many parts of the world were forced to pay additional sums to rent rooms and apartments, due to inflation and high energy expenses, in addition to the rise in living expenses, including food prices and the prices of restaurant and cafe services, transportation, and others.

The research paper was published in the public health journal Thelancet, and its authors also stated that the mental health differences between graduates and non-graduates at the age of 25, that is, at the end of the university years, no longer exist.

The paper stated that if the causes of depression among students were addressed, it would be possible for rates of depression and anxiety to decline among young people between 18 and 19 years of age.

Dr. Gemma Lewis, an assistant professor at the same college, points out that the decline in students’ mental health can create long-term repercussions in their lives. “The first years of higher education are key to self-development,” she says. “So if students’ mental health is improved, we can expect positive long-term outcomes in their health, well-being, academic achievement and success.”

The results of the study were consistent with another research conducted by King’s College London, which confirmed that mental health problems reported among students had nearly tripled in recent years, rising from 6% to 16%, and were particularly prevalent among females and non-binary people, and one of the reasons for this was the high cost of the living.

One of the effects of these problems is the high percentage of students who think about leaving the university for purely financial reasons, while others tend to work more during study times, which also had a negative impact on mental health.

Vitamin D

Some scientists link a lack of vitamin D in the body to an increase in symptoms of depression and a negative impact on mood. It is not clear whether vitamin D deficiency directly causes depression, but it is known that those suffering from depression do not go out much and therefore are not exposed to sufficient sunlight. Therefore, it is recommended to be exposed to the sun whenever possible, especially for those who live in areas where winters are long.
