The Rise of China-Europe Freight Trains: Connecting Continents and Changing Lives

More than 2,000 years ago, the Silk Road, which ran from east to west and connected Europe and Asia, connected China and the world. Nowadays, the railway network stretching for tens of thousands of kilometers runs through Europe and Asia. The China-Europe freight trains, known as the “steel camel train”, have gone from one line to one network, sketching out a picture of the era that connects the world, and also changing this picture. on many people’s lives.

Zhang Xiaojun, 56, has been working as a China-Europe train driver for ten years. What makes him most proud of these ten years is that he can enter and exit the solemn country gate every three days on average.

Zhang Xiaojun, driver of Manzhouli operation workshop of Qiqihar Locomotive Depot:When the first China-Europe train departed from Manzhouli Station, I was on duty. We are the last team in China, and we will be the first team to go abroad and go to the world. I am very proud.

Zhang Xiaojun’s job is to pull the China-Europe freight train from Manzhouli Port to Zabaikal Station in Russia. After completing the reloading there, the train loaded with imported supplies was pulled back to Manzhouli. Although the one-way trip is only 9.8 kilometers, he has traveled more than 24,000 kilometers on this line.

In the ten years since Zhang Xiaojun entered and exited the country again and again, the capacity of China-Europe freight trains has continued to expand. The number of ports like Manzhouli has increased to six; the number of routes has increased from one in Yuxinou to 86 now. At the dispatching and command center of the China Railway Group, Li Jun is always paying attention to the operation status of the China-Europe trains.

Li Jun, Deputy Director of the China Railway Group Dispatching Command Center:It is now around 14:45. We now show that there are 119 China-Europe trains on the way, including 64 outbound trains and 55 return trains. There are now a total of 40 China-Europe trains departing from various stations on daily routes.

Li Jun told reporters that the China-Europe train network is not only getting denser and denser, but also getting faster and faster. Since last year, two-way full timetable China-Europe trains have been launched from Xi’an to Duisburg, Germany, and from Chengdu to Lodz, Poland. The fastest trip from Duisburg to Xi’an is only 9 days. On the only way for this China-Europe train, Zhang Desheng, the deputy station director of Alashankou Station, now often has video conversations with the attendant at the Dostyk Port Station in Kazakhstan.

Behind the China-Europe trains in front of us, a service network has been established that basically covers the entire Eurasian continent, allowing some landlocked countries to find more outlets to the sea.

Uzbekistan is located in the hinterland of Central Asia. Most inbound and outbound goods have always been transported to Siberia by car and then transported out by rail. In July this year, they launched the first multimodal train to and from China’s Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region through the China-Europe train service network. Uzbekistan’s goods can be transported directly there and then transferred to Tianjin for export.

Hasilov, Chairman of the Uzbekistan Railway Container Company:Not only has this line been opened with China, but we have actually built a network with neighboring countries, not only in Central Asia, but also in Europe. Railways bring us convenience, and China-Europe trains are like opening up a new channel for us to connect the world.

Like Hasiloff, who enjoys the convenience of China-Europe trains is Melissa from this women’s clothing wholesale store in Madrid, Spain. The goods in the store come from Yiwu, China, thousands of miles away, which is known as the “Supermarket of the World”, while Madrid is the largest small commodity distribution center in Europe. In Melissa’s view, the China-Europe trains have brought the two cities closer and closer. , and her business grew bigger and bigger.

Melissa, a staff member at a women’s clothing wholesale store in Madrid:We have customers from Latin America, or from other parts of Europe, such as France, Italy and Germany. We also have customers from Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Panama, Colombia and Argentina.

From one line to one network, in the 10 years since the “Belt and Road” initiative was put forward, the “steel camel fleet” of China-Europe freight trains has connected 112 cities in 5 major gathering centers in China and 217 cities in 25 European countries. They closely connected the Eurasian continent, created a new path of mutual benefit and win-win, and wrote new miracles on the ancient Silk Road.
