Elon Musk Accuses Canadian Prime Minister of Suppressing Freedom of Speech with New Online Regulations

American businessman Elon Musk on October 1 accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of trying to destroy freedom of speech in his country. He explained his accusation due to the entry into force of new regulation regarding online platforms that provide streaming and podcast publishing services.

“Trudeau is trying to destroy free speech in Canada. Shameful,” he wrote on social network X as a commentary on the actions of the Canadian authorities.

At the end of September, the Canadian Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) officially announced that new rules for streaming services and podcasts were coming into force. According to these documents, online platforms that generate annual revenue of more than 10 million Canadian dollars (approximately $7.4 million) must register in the country by November 28, 2023.

In an explanation of the regulation, they added that registration requirements also apply to social networks and other online services.

On September 19, it was reported that social network X, according to Musk, plans to launch a monthly paid subscription. The entrepreneur did not specify how much the innovation would cost and what functions of the application would not be available without a subscription.
