Question:
Hello Doc, some time ago I checked the uric acid levels in my blood. It turns out the results show 12.5 points. Finally I was directed to an internist and given medicine.
Can gout be cured with medication and do you have to take this medication for the rest of your life, Doc?
Coco (female, 21 years old)
Answer:
The limit for hyperuricemia is 6.8. Meanwhile, uric acid lowering therapy is above 9 if the patient is asymptomatic.
Apart from that, medication will also be given if the points are above 8. Especially for sufferers without symptoms, but with a risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
However, if the patient has symptoms of gout or pain and swelling in the joints, generally in the big toe joint, then the target is to reduce uric acid to below 6.
Increased uric acid is influenced by several factors, such as:
Foodstuffs containing excessive purine Green vegetablesEmptingImpaired excretion through the kidneys, such as decreased kidney functionLack of activity
