This Saturday, September 30, 2023, Thomas Dutronc was the guest of Ophélie Meunier in her show on RTL, Confidential dedicated to Serge Gainsbourg. At his microphone, he agreed to look back on his beautiful relationship with the singer which began when he was a child: “I knew Serge especially when I was a child (…) We saw each other regularly. We had fun, we had good times… I think he loved me a lot, there was a pretty strong bond between us. The last time we saw each other, Charlotte [Gainsbourg] said to me: ‘It’s crazy, you know Serge, he really loved you.’ We saw each other quite regularly. I was going to his place to spend some time. Sometimes we listened to music…”.

During this time spent together, Serge Gainsbourg passed on his taste for music: “I was a kid, I was a little shy. I listened to a lot of music. It interested me but I didn’t do it at all yet. Unfortunately, I started when Serge had already left. I regret this so much. I don’t think I would have dared to ask him anything. I think he had a kindness for me. I would have loved to enjoy it musically if he had been able to give me advice.”
Indeed, when Serge Gainsbourg died in March 1991, Thomas Dutronc is 17 years old. Good times that he will remember all his life, despite the sometimes negative portrait that was painted of Charlotte Gainsbourg’s father: “It disgusted me when people said he was dirty etc., because he was so elegant, well dressed. He was always careful about what he put on, he smelled good… I loved giving him a kiss because he smelled good.
