An interesting development in the case of espionage in favor of Russia, in which five Bulgarians in Great Britain were involved. One name was mentioned in the courtroom – that of one of the most wanted fraudsters in the world – Jan Marsalek. He is linked to one of the biggest financial frauds in Germany. Now the authorities in Great Britain believe that he gave orders to the alleged mastermind of the Bulgarian group Orlin Rusev.
THE ISLAND ESPIONAGE CASE: From Site Observations to Kidnapping Arrangements
Investigative journalist Fidelius Schmidt from “Spiegel” indicated that there are suspicions that the five Bulgarians were also active in Germany. “What is happening in Great Britain concerns many European countries. Jan Marsalek has known the Bulgarians for years, there are also e-mails in which it is said to track mobile devices. The British authorities believe that Marsalek, at the behest of the Russian secret services, initiated the group, to spy on and track people, but also to buy surveillance equipment. Marsalek had interests in espionage and encryption, and was very interested in cryptography being present in his communications. He organized the surveillance of journalists from the Financial Times newspaper “It can be assumed that Marsalek had a connection with the Russian secret services even before the war in Ukraine,” he emphasized.
According to him, Marsalek’s company Wirecard was the rising star of the German stock market. “In a very short time, the company grew. It offered services in the field of electronic payments. They had credit card terminals and prepaid ones used by people who did not want to make their money flows public. This company seemingly grew, until at some point journalists from the “Financial Times” discovered inconsistencies. In 2020, it became clear that 1.9 billion were missing or never existed. The company went bankrupt, and soon after Marsalek disappeared, first to Belarus, then probably to Moscow,” Schmidt said.
Bulgarians accused of espionage in Great Britain remain in custody
According to him, Marsalek was responsible for the company’s business in Asia. “It was his responsibility, all the turnover went through him when the company went bankrupt, he said he would travel to Asia to take care of the missing money. There is also an email about a flight to the Philippines which turns out to be fake, and in reality he was in Russia. The German prosecutor’s office is looking for him with an international warrant,” explained the journalist. And he added that Marsalek did not escape alone, but there were testimonies of accomplices who admitted their involvement in organizing the flight.
“I believe he had help from his partners in the Russian intelligence services. Marsalek flaunted and boasted about his connections with the secret services. Days after the bankruptcy of the Wirecard company, it became clear that he had the secret formula for the Novichok nerve agent and he has been showing her to people. He spends most of his time in Russia. Maybe the Russians like to use his services and want to protect him. Bulgarians seem like a random bunch of people, but that is not the case for Orlin Rusev. He is he also brought other people, and they were not qualified and trained spies before, they acquired skills gradually. They had to follow, spy and observe, they were not professionals,” commented Schmidt.
