October 1, 2023
Health authorities of Serbia have notified since the beginning of 2023 18 cases of whooping cough in Belgrade, 5 in the last month. The figure represents a significant increase compared to previous years. Most are unvaccinated babies or unvaccinated older children. In 2022 there were no cases, in 2021 there were 2 cases, in 2020 there were 3, in 2019 there were 14 and in 2018 there were 29, in 2017 41 cases were reported.
The return of whooping cough is another confirmation that forgotten diseases for which there is an effective vaccine are returning. A strong anti-vaccine lobby, which spreads half-truths or falsehoods, mainly on social networks, has confused parents. For this reason, many postpone vaccination or do not vaccinate their children at all.
