Elshinta.com – The Lampung Agricultural Quarantine Center said that inter-island traffic of rabies-transmitting animals (HPR) must fulfill a number of requirements to prevent transmission of the disease, one of which is rabies vaccination.

“HPR must be vaccinated against rabies as proven by a rabies vaccine book before being trafficked,” said Head of the Lampung Agricultural Center, Donni Muksydayan, in Bandarlampung, Sunday.

He also said that other mandatory requirements that must be met when passing HPR between islands are to be equipped with a veterinary certificate from the area of origin of the animal, an antibody titer test against rabies that shows it is still protective and that it does not come from an area where there is an outbreak of the disease.

“HPR that will be trafficked must also be reported to the Agricultural Quarantine Center officers at the point of exit or entry for quarantine measures to be taken,” he said.

He also mentioned several types of animals that can specifically transmit rabies or what are usually called rabies-transmitting animals (HPR), namely dogs, cats and monkeys.

“What we all need to know is that rabies is a disease caused by a virus from the genus Lysavirus. This virus which attacks the nervous system makes sufferers more sensitive to light and wind,” said Sil.

This disease can also be transmitted from animals to humans or is zoonotic with a mortality rate of almost 100 percent. In fact, to date, rabies has caused the deaths of 59,000 people per year in the world, the majority of whom are children under the age of 15 years.

“In Indonesia alone, deaths due to Rabies in 2022 will reach 102 people,” he said.

Therefore, he continued, to prevent or reduce the risk of death from this disease, there is no harm in the general public learning to recognize the symptoms that appear in infected animals.

“Therefore, let’s together prevent rabies by carrying out routine HPR health checks, carrying out rabies vaccinations and reporting to the Quarantine Officer if we are going to traffic rabies-susceptible animals at entry or exit points,” he said.

Animals infected with rabies will usually show one of two types of symptoms, continued Donni, the first is the crazy type, namely the infected animal will be easily provoked, more sensitive, alert, pupils dilated, not aware of fear, and can attack other animals or humans and moving object.

“HPR will usually swallow foreign objects such as dirt, stones, wire, cage iron or other hard objects. These symptoms will progress to nervous incoordination, then die after experiencing paralysis,” he said.

He said the second one was the silent type. HPR will experience stiffness in parts of the body which can usually be seen from stiffness of the lower jaw, gaping mouth, excessive saliva production, and inability to swallow.

“This type does not show symptoms of being crazy or fierce, and it is very rare to bite. These symptoms can progress to paralysis throughout the body, coma and death after a few hours,” he said.

Meanwhile, he also said that the main prevention of rabies transmission is by vaccinating HPR, because animals that have been vaccinated will have antibodies that are used to fight the rabies virus if it enters the body.

“The high level of HPR traffic between islands is of course a special concern so that the beloved animals brought in do not carry this very deadly disease,” he said.
