This edition of the San Sebastián Festival had its particularities. The strike of screenwriters – which was finally lifted this week – and of Hollywood actors was noted and, in the absence of American actors and actresses, their European and other counterparts became the big stars. For this edition, 350 thousand euros more were invested than in 2022 in order to reinforce a program that included 232 films, of which 57 had their world premiere at the show.

This Saturday, the 71st edition came to an end, with the consecration of the Argentine actor Marcelo Subiotto, who won the Silver Shell for his work in Puan, the comedy that also won the award for best script. Another award for Argentina was the one that went to the film El Castillo, director Martín Benchimol’s first feature film, which also won the Horizontes award from the Latin American section.

The Golden Shell for best film went to the Spanish O corno, by Jaione Camborda, a drama between women set in a town in Galicia during the Spanish dictatorship. The Silver Shell for best direction went to Taiwanese Peng Tzu-Hui and Wang Ping-Wen, for A Journey in Spring.

Argentine directors María Alché and Benjamín Naishtat, also screenwriters of Puan, received the award for best script. In the film, Subiotto plays a philosophy professor at the University of Buenos Aires. Another Argentine, Eduardo Williams, was the winner of the Zabaltegi Tabakalera section for The Rise of the Human 3, and Ulises de la Torre was recognized with a special mention in this section for the documentary The Trial, which reviews the different instances of the historic trial of the military junta that participated in the last dictatorship.

In addition to the awards ceremony, several screenings, premieres and press conferences were held this Saturday in which actors, actresses and directors wore relaxed looks and appeared relaxed and smiling.
