As ESPN reporter Adam Schefter reports, the Las Vegas Raiders are releasing the defensive end who won the Super Bowl alongside Tom Brady with the New England Patriots in 2015.
Jones was arrested on Friday in Las Vegas. According to court documents, the 33-year-old was taken to the Clark County Detention Center.
The Raiders had commented on Jones’ arrest with a noticeably concerned statement: “We hope that Chandler Jones gets the help he needs. He, his family and everyone involved are in our thoughts.”
Jones was released on $15,000 bail on Friday evening but is due back in court on December 4th. The latest developments are the latest chapter in a disturbing story.
Jones has not yet played for the franchise this season and has not been with the team since May.
The 33-year-old had recently fired heavily on social media against the team, the owner, general manager Dave Ziegler and coach Josh McDaniels and had been placed on the sick list by the franchise. On Monday, Jones announced that he had been taken to the hospital and later to a psychiatric institution by the fire department against his will.
On Thursday he spoke on Instagram in a live video that caused great consternation among viewers. Among other things, he talked about his former teammate Aaron Hernandez, with whom he played on the New Patriots.
Jones, one of the best players at his position (two All-Pro, four Pro Bowl selections), signed a three-year, $51 million contract with the Raiders in March 2022. He previously played for the Arizona Cardinals for five years.
