Robots have infiltrated Hell’s Kitchen, performing various tasks and providing unique experiences. Skyline Robotics has introduced Ozmo, a window-washing robot that is currently operating at 10 Hudson Yards. Ozmo utilizes LiDAR technology to map the building’s exterior and determine window dimensions. Powered by AI technology, it can autonomously react to its surroundings and efficiently clean the windows. The integration of robots into the workforce raises concerns about the potential threat to human workers. However, according to Ross Blum, President & Chief Operating Officer of Skyline Robotics, the window cleaning industry has seen a decline in the workforce, making room for new opportunities for individuals interested in learning new technology.
In addition to window cleaners, robots are also being utilized for simpler tasks. The VIA 57 West building employs a robotic cleaner that vacuums building floors, while restaurant and bar Carla has a robotic server named Bella that can sing Happy Birthday and serve diners their preferred appetizer. The robotic server has become a well-known and entertaining staff member at Carla.
Even the NYPD has adopted robotic colleagues to enhance public safety. Mayor Eric Adams recently introduced the K5 Autonomous Security Robots, equipped with cameras that provide live video feed to NYPD headquarters. These robots, costing only $9 an hour to operate, will patrol public areas of Times Square accompanied by a police officer during a two-month trial. The NYPD also utilizes remote-controlled Digidogs for deployment in difficult situations.
As more innovations are introduced, building trust with humans remains crucial. Despite the advanced technology, Ross emphasizes the importance of understanding the challenges and staying focused. The impact of robots in Hell’s Kitchen continues to expand, and only time will reveal what the future holds.
