Twenty-nine-year-old Pegula didn’t give Sakkaria a chance and deprived her of the opportunity to follow up in Japan on last week’s triumph in Guadalajara. In Mexico, the Greek player ended her four-year wait for the title.
Pegula will play for the fourth title in her career and the second this season in Tokyo. She triumphed in Toronto this year. She will face Kuděrmětová for the second time, in May in Madrid she lost to Russia in three sets.
Twenty-six-year-old Kuděrmětová worked significantly harder to progress. She defeated Pavlyuchenkova after three and a half hours, and against the finalist of the Tokyo tournament from 2017 and 2019, she converted only the fifth match point.
The Russian tennis player will aim for the second tournament triumph in her career. Kuděrmětová’s only success on the WTA circuit so far is the title from Charleston in 2021. She lost the next five final matches.
