“The dip of the Corona period seems to be overcome,” writes the Swiss association for cinema and film distribution ProCinema. As in various other areas of entertainment, the cinema business also collapsed during the pandemic. Now we can no longer think about it. The number of visitors to Swiss cinemas has increased by 30 percent compared to 2022 – from 6 to 7.8 million.
Only ten percent are still missing from the number of tickets sold in 2019. ProCinema is confident that it will soon get back to this level, says Secretary General René Gerber. “The cinema is generally a nightlife theme again and some films are attracting a large audience again. In addition, the reluctance of some groups of spectators, for example older people, to take part in events with many people has continued to decrease.
At cinemas in rural regions, the number of viewers is not yet quite at the same level as in urban areas, says Gerber. However, they would also be moving in the right direction.
Pathé Westside with increase
The number of cinemas in the Bern area corresponds to those in the whole of Switzerland. The Pathé Westside cinema in Bern-Brünnen, for example, was able to increase the number of visitors by around 30 percent, as media spokeswoman Yvonna Stauffer wrote upon request. “The drivers of this positive development were blockbusters such as Avatar: The Way of Water, Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Oppenheimer.”
Pathé is also confident for autumn and winter. “With The Marvels, The Hunger Games – The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Napoleon, Wonka and Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, we have a fantastic cinema program for all cinema fans during the cold season.”
Barbie and Oppenheimer stand out
At blue Cinema in Muri they are also happy about the development of the cinema. “We are very satisfied. This year, some great blockbusters were released in cinemas that aroused a high level of audience interest,” says media spokesman Michael Fenner. The films Barbie and Oppenheimer were clearly the best in Muri.
The Rex cinema in Bern even ended the 2022-2023 financial year with a new record, as communications manager Martina Amrein writes. The Kulturkino on Schwanengasse sold 60,200 admissions, which is over 11,000 more tickets than in the best financial year to date, 2018-2019. «The reasons for this are varied. “We had, among other things, premiere films in the program that attracted a lot of audiences,” says Amrein.
